It’s a Wrap!

I haven’t had a chance to blog about my experience doing the theater show, Forever Fosse and I apologize about this.  I have to say, it was one of the best experiences I have had since moving to LA yet.  My involvement with the show started off rather odd.  One day I decided that I wanted to do musical theater and the next day I saw the breakdowns (they are like job postings for actors) and there were two roles posted.  One was for Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta Jones character in Chicago) and one for Sally Bowles (the role made famous by Liza Minelli in Caberet).  I almost chuckled to myself as I submitted my headshot and resume because I truly believed that here was no way that they would call me in for an audition.

Surprisingly, the director called the very next day and asked me to come in for an audition the following day!  I was excited but a little worried because, let’s be honest, I haven’t sung in public for like ten years, didn’t know one broadway/show tune and this was going to be done accapella.  Have no fear.  I quickly googled some broadway songs for women, watched a little Youtube and then recorded myself singing with headphones on to make sure I wasn’t tone deaf.  I figured that I had nothing to lose and afterall, this is why I moved to LA – - to take risks.

All went well and the director, Heidi Favia, offered me the roles of Lola Hernandez, a woman who makes a deal with the devil to keep her looks, and Mama Morton, a no b.s. jail warden who has a tough attititude.   I loved both of these characters.  Lola is a seductress and Mama is one tough broad.  My favorite was definitely Mama Morton because her song, “When You’re Good to Mama”, was a blast to sing and I got to belt out a lot.

Not only did I enjoy performing in front of  a live audience for 9 shows, I also loved that I was a part of something.  I loved  that I wasn’t waiting around until someone called me.  Essentially, I had taken my career into  my own hands and this was empowering.  Most of all though, I was thrilled to be doing what I came to LA to do….”PERFORMING”!  I am definitely going to look for more theater opportunities and am excited about what the future may hold.  Until then, here are a couple of fun pics:A compilation of Cabaret, Chicago, Damn Yankees and Sweet Charity, Forever Fosse was a blast! Needless to say, we were dressed (or not dressed) for most of the show…hence the black lingerie. Mom and dad approved..whew!

Um…somebody thought they were hot stuff apparently. Nice collar (thanks Jeanna for the loan)
